Easy Cartoon Turtle Drawing Tutorial
Let’s draw a luurve turtle and a cyber punk turtle in today’s fun step by step cartoon turtle drawing tutorial.
Guys, when I was learning about turtles and tortoises to write up some fun fast facts, I learned the best fun fact of all about these cool creatures. Did you know that a group of tortoises is called a CREEP? Hahaha! How fun is that!
My other fave ‘groups of’ include a ‘Murder of Crows’ and a ‘Fever of Stingray’. Got any others? Let me know in the comments below!
Other cool things I learned include:
Tortoises have been around for over 200 million years. That’s the Triassic period peeps! Literally even before dinosaurs were all the rage
Some tortoises can live for over 100 years! That’s why its not a good idea to get one as a pet. Even if you’re planning to be super healthy, by the time you get your pet tortoise it’s still going to outlive you by at least 30+ years… ‘I hereby bequeath you… my tortoise’.
So what about turtles? What cool facts did I dig up about them? Well, here are a few:
Turtles hiss when they are scared.
Turtles come in all shapes and sizes and can be found in lots of climates around the world. The largest sea turtle; the Leatherback Turtle can grow up to eight feet long (or just over 2m) whereas the smallest turtle the ‘Speckled Padloper Tortoise’ measure a teeny 6-10cm long.
Turtles go back to the same beach they were born to lay their eggs when they are old enough. Even if they’re a gazillion miles away they’ll still head back there. Talk about having an accurate internal homing device! Unfortunately though, this is one of the reasons why turtles are endangered. When their home beach is underwater because the ocean has risen or the beach has been worn away by storms, then they have nowhere to lay their eggs.
Turtle or Tortoise?
In a nutshell, turtles live in the water, tortoises live on land. Technically, our love turtle and cyber punk turtle look more like tortoises, but… meh…. I figured if they can call Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, turtles then I can get away with calling mine turtles too.

Cyber Punk Cartoon Turtle Drawing – Video Tutorial!
You know I like to mix things up, so I’ll show you how to create this funky little dude using the same techniques we use to create the ‘Luurve Turtle’ version.
Step by Step Luurve Turtle Drawing Tute
Peeps – Let’s slow it down turtle style.
Step One: Nuthin’ but Shell
Friends! Step one is drawing the basic shell outline. This is the opposite way round to how we drew ‘Janice the Hippie Snail‘. Today we’re starting with the shell and drawing the turtle underneath it. It’s just easier that way.
Sweet Tip: Want to make your turtle look less tortoise-like and more realisic turtle style? Just draw the shell flatter. Easy!
Step Two: Pretty as a Bell
For our second step, just join up the ends of the bell (shell) to give our turtle a comfy rim for the shell to sit on.
Step Three: Guidelines Are Your Friend
Looks complicated? Well actually… all you need to do is draw the circle for the head like in the picture, then add a few guidelines to help you out in the following steps.
If you’re getting really good at these cartoons then feel free to leave the guidelines out, but I still use guidelines to this day. For our turtle here, they will show me where to place the belly and legs.
Step Four: Bring On the Belly
See how useful our guidelines are? Now we just follow them and fill in the gaps. I started with the bottom line first and drew the neck and bumpy belly. Then I just joined them to the shell with the top line and added a little tail while I was at it.
Step Five: Turtle Got Legs
Again, using my guidelines, I added some cute stumpy lil’ legs. You can change the look of your turtle by drawing flippers instead of legs or by doing things like making the legs fatter at the top.
I deliberately made mine slimmer at the top and a bit wider at the bottom because it gives you a cuter look. You know all those K-Pop singers who wear those fluffy boots with mini skirts? Gives them that cutesie look. Same thing here.
SWEET TIP: To get a bit of depth in your cartoon turtle drawing, make sure to draw the back legs a little shorter than the front ones. This gives the illusion that they are a bit further away.
FUN FACT ABOUT ME: When I was 21, I lived in South Korea teaching middle school English and Kindergarten Arts and Crafts for a year. While I was there midriff tops were ‘in’ in western countries but not in South Korea. They all kept pulling my top down to cover my belly because they thought it was funny at the time.
Step Six: Adding the Eyes
Ok STOP RIGHT THERE!!!! My friend, this is the step where you get to experiment with your eye shapes. I went with a simple round eye that jots outside the head a bit but you can do sly eyes, slanty eyes, evil eyes… try a bunch of different eye shapes before you commit.
Step Seven: Create Your Character
It wasn’t until this nearly last step that I decided my turtle was going to be a love turtle. Before this I thought I would draw another crazy turtle character, but for some reason the sultry eyelashess and pouty lips just seemed to work for my turtle this time round.
Once I discovered my character’s general vibe, the step below was easy.
Step Eight: Add the Swanky Bits
What else would a luurve turtle cartoon have on its shell but love hearts!? I drew a cute flower to add a little extra flair and POOF! My love turtle is ready to color.
Step Eight: Kiss the Luurve Turtle!
To be fair, it was around Valentine’s Fay that I drew this turtle, so the love hearts and pink was pretty fitting. Notice how the bottom of her shell matches her flower accessory? Yep. So stylish.
