Frog-Drawing

Frogs. They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and levels of cuteness (or ugliness… hello Australian Cane Toad, we’re talking to you!) But for now, let’s just imagine the cute ones. So… the big question is, how do you draw a frog? There’s so many choices!

Skinny legs, big fat belly, attitude, or teddy bear cute? My friends, my fave kind of frog is one with a bit of attitude (of course!) but is also more on the cuter side of life.

So today’s frog drawing tutorial will show you step by step how to recreate our little blue frog… and just for kicks, I turned him into a vampire frog. heh heh.

Hey, if vampire frogs aren’t your thing, then leave out the teeth. You can add a bow or whatever instead. Ready to go?! I’ve created a video and a written tutorial for you below.

Vampire Frog Step-by-step Tutorial

Learn how to draw a frog with this step-by-step art tutorial. Let’s break our froggy dude down!

Frog Drawing -Milan's Mischief

Step One: Let the Frog Drawing Begin!

As always, I like to start off my drawings with the general shape of the character. Our frog drawing is shaped much like an upside down egg. It doesn’t need to be perfect.

Step Two: Be Frog-a-licious

If you’ve done more of my drawing tutorials you’ll know that guidelines are pretty important if you don’t want your character to end up lopsided. So now is the time to draw a line for him to sit on and decide on the direction your frog is looking.

Step Three: ‘Ribbitty Ribbit!’

Leggy things frogs are. Its all that high intensity squat to jump action! So for our frog drawing, start the legs with two random looking lines out from either side of the egg shape.

Step Four: ‘Boing!’

This is where to fill in the rest of the back legs. You can make his feet really tiny or HUGE if you want. I personally have an issue with the size of my own feet, so I was nice to my frog and drew him with reasonable froggy size 7’s.

Step Five: The Frog Comes To Life!

Draw in the front legs. You want these to be curved to follow the body around and to sit just in front of the back legs. Just draw them over the lines and erase the back legs where they intercept.

SWEET TIP: If you use a drawing tablet like I do, erasing lines is super easy. Or just use layers.

Step Six: Easy Peasy Frog

Huzzah! This is the fun step where we get to draw our frog’s face. I like to draw the eyes sitting slightly above the head. No, its not realistic, but who cares! Doing this makes our frog drawing look cute. You can draw massive eyes if you want, or slant them inward for a mischievous look.

Step Seven: The Vampire Arises!

Time to pull our frog together. I erased around the sides of his mouth and added a little more shape to accommodate his massive smile and then just added in some froggy dots, eyebrows for personality and of course…. the vampire teeth. 🙂

SWEET TIP: You can do whatever you want to your frog. Add some hair, sunnies, a bow tie. Anything goes. Tag me on insta to show me what you’ve done! @nicolamilanart.

Step Eight: All Hail The FROG!

Time to color! Your frog drawing can be ANY COLOR YOU LIKE! Actually… if you do a bit of research online, you’ll notice that frogs come in a plethora of colours and patterns. They’re actually pretty cool. So, I went for a blue with red dots motif for my frog… maybe next time I’ll draw him with zebra stripes!

So I hope you’ve enjoy my frog drawing tutorial. Let me know if you had fun in the comments below or if you’d like to know how to draw frogs in different sizes and colors.
