How To Draw A Dragon… With Attitude!
Learn to draw this funky little dragon with my fun step-by-step tutorial.
Friends! If you’re anything like me then you LOVE a good dragon pic. Sure… there are the ferocious, regular dragons you get on super cool artist sites like Behance or DeviantArt or there are the plethora of versions of Disney’s ‘Toothless’… (ok… Toothless is super cute)… but today we’re going to draw something unique and special.
We’ll draw a dragon that’s funky and has a serious attitude problem.
Yep, this is the kind of dragon that sits at an outside bar, people watching, rating all the passers-by by their fashion sense. Our dragon thinks it’s the bomb and has the funky threads to show it. So, without any further ado, let’s take a look at how to draw our stuck up little friend.
Ps: Don’t forget all artwork on this site is original art created by me. I’d love you to recreate it and share your stuff on social, just remember to tag me @nicolamilanart (and no commercial resale allowed. Thanks!)
Let’s start with the basic shape of our dragon. I drew a squashed oval for the head, then a rounder circle for the body. Once you have those, draw in the guide lines for the neck and tail. This can take a bit of practice to get smooth but start with the circles and just erase the guide lines till you get them right.
We’re heading straight into the details peeps. So draw in a nose bump, ears and start to form your tail.
SUPER COOL TIP: You don’t have to draw the end of your tail like mine. You can add a circle at the end or double spikes or whatever!
A few more details get added in this step. I like to add in the eye pretty early on so I can see what kind of personality my dragon will have. The more slanty and skinny you draw the eye, the more attitude it will have. If you do a big round eye it will make it look cuter and more innocent…. but we don’t want innocent. We want ATTITUDE!
Connect up your lines (the neck) and erase any lines in the way.
Ok…. this is where a guide line is super helpful. I always stuff up my legs by making them wonky… so putting a little line along the bottom shows you where to align your legs to so the dragon looks like its sitting flat.
Oooh yeah! This is where it gets super fun. The more spikes the merrier! Some dragons have wings, so if you want yours to have them, now would be the time to draw them in.
I like to mix things up in my world of Dragons. Some are runners, some are flyers, some are swimmers… you get the idea!
Very important step – no, I’m not talking about the extra stripes, I’m talking about the EYELID! See how I’ve made my dragon look totally sneaky by adding an eyelid?
The more eyelid, the sneakier your dragon will look… or it could also come out looking sleepy depending on how you’ve drawn the mouth.
Add in your teeth and a smoke puff. Bonus points for drawing slime dripping off the teeth.
Then you’re done!
Aw yeah! Color that bad boy in and POOF! Your dragon with attitude is done. I like to go for high contrast colours, but you can do pastels or whatevs.
